Hello Internets!

Last Thursday I had nothing to tell you but now I have a whole bunch of stories!

I spent an amazing weekend in Wellington with a bunch of fangirls. They were all super nice and accepting and even though I didn’t know many of them, the weekend was full of inside jokes, giggling and ~serious discussions~ about fandom.

[livejournal.com profile] jocondite,[livejournal.com profile] shihadchick, [livejournal.com profile] blademistress and I shared a room at a hotel near the botanic gardens and stayed up waaaay to late chatting and wrestling every night. (There is nothing purer than the love of a man for his headless zombie chicken!)

Ummm there will probably be more on Get Together later, but really, suffice to say it was awesome. Also, Calucciland actually lived up to the hype.

It was tinged with a little melancholy since it was the last time I am going to see Wellington, but it was definitely an appropriate send off and I couldn’t have better memories of the place than that. It was also really great to get to say goodbye to [livejournal.com profile] nmarlow.

In other news, on Friday right before we left, I got mail. The new Shihad CD! I won it in a newspaper contest! Hai I’m in New Zealand winning your prizes :p. Needless to say I shall cede it to C when I get the music from it as I feel she has more right to it and will appreciate it more and then I won’t have to pack it.

C and I have successfully earned enough money from selling her stuff to pay for two tickets to the Adam Lambert concert the Sunday before I go (DON’T JUDGE ME!) and we have ~awesome~ unicorn skirts I made that we’re going to destroy with glitter for the occasion. Anyone who wants us to wear them at work should make a donation to breast cancer this week. Let us know and we’ll send you a picture (or at least a link to a picture).

Fighting with insurance companies updates )

Con-G has 500 people signed up as interested in attending w00tstock at Con-G. If you would seriously consider coming to w00tstock in Guelph, Ontario in February, sign up. And spread the word; We’ve gotten 500 people in 2 weeks but we need at least 700 for the guys to consider it seriously. W00tstock at Con-G

This weekend C and I are going on a roadtrip to Taranaki because I haven’t been there and she has friends there. Hopefully the weather will be nice and I can finally cash in on my Christmas present of trail riding on the beach.

So much still to do in New Zealand!

Tonight I start looking for work at home more seriously.

Hey look! I'm going to post in my journal. I need to try and remember to do this more often. Telling [livejournal.com profile] shihadchick out loud and telling all the short things to twitter zaps me of my desire to write LJ posts but I don't want to be 'that person'.

Claire and I both woke up dead this morning and I seriously considered going back to sleep and 'forgetting' going to work but in the end dragged myself out of bed. 5 minutes after our usual departure time, she comes in in her PJs to tell me she's not going. Thus enabled, I hmm and haw for another minute before deciding to go. I don't get sick days and I had already dragged myself vertical and into some clothes. Turns out it's a good thing I went since New Gut was also away at training. Also I lucked out because the plant was down so I only had to work on yesterday's samples.

My day was amazing. I managed to fall over things, drop things, throw things in completely the wrong direction, split things on top of other things. One particularly memorable incident had me walk right into the tray on my balance hard enough to know the whole thing backwards and behind the scale. I didn't know the tray would fit back there! I didn't know I weighed enough to overbalance a 15 kg tray by stumbling! *sigh* my life.

On the radio, I have three stations programmed so I can jump between them. The first station was having a 'show us some hot lesbians' contest' (apparently the DJ didn't know lesbians could be hot. FUUUUU) so that got vetoed pretty quick. The next station had a contest to win a meet and greet with Adam Lambert by sending in a picture of 'you and your best gay buddy'. Also WTF?
On the third station, they were having a contest about stories that actually happened to you that no one would believe. One guy called in and said, 'I rode a lion.' which sounds implausible until you realize that he worked at a zoo as a caregiver for the lions but that's beside the point; on hearing this guy's story, the DJ says, 'So you're like He-Man?!' LOL.

C and I did more sightseeing this weekend and it was awesome. This weekend we fly to Wellington for a fandom get together. The weekend after that, we're doing a little roadtrip south to see what we can see.

I'm making these awesome skirts to wear to work, ostensibly for breast cancer awareness, but also to see our coworkers' faces. The skirts are apricot with poodleskirt-like patches of a unicorn. We have matching rainbow unicorn shirts too. It's going to be epic. We're thinking of getting some kind of sponsorship thing together whereby if you want to see a picture of this, donate a couple dollars to breast cancer, notify us and we'll make it happen.

Okay, first of all, I don't want to make my journal locked. Occasionally I like to direct people here who are not on LJ and I don't feel that they should need to register to read my posts. That being said, I am NOT thrilled with the idea of anyone on my facebook being able to come over and look at them Please don't crosspost any of my stuff and I will look into whether or not I need to make my journal friendlocked. If it is, I guess I'll have to start figuring out how to actually use my dreamwidth.

The rest of this I was going to post on Thursday but then we got busy at work.

Guys guys guys! C recovered the stuff off my hardrive!!! She is the best C I ever did see!!! I have my pictures back! Now we’re going to buy me a new one and see if I can get them to throw in a North American plug adaptor. Then we’re going to freeze the old one for science.

Yesterday [livejournal.com profile] jocondite finally got me out to the Tapas restaurant that she likes so much and I can see why. It was really good food, nice atmosphere and reasonably priced for the amount and quality of what we got. I was pleased that we got to treat [livejournal.com profile] shihadchick to a nice restaurant for her b-day because what she wants for her b-day dinner tonight is fish and chips … *gives her a funny look* … she’s not looking.

Scott Pilgrim )

Thank you all for your thoughts on my last post. Despite all your advice and love from you NZ peeps, I think I’m still leaning towards going home. We’ll see. Now to figure out if I can stay an extra couple weeks and decide if I should go to Melbourne Armageddon.

In all my angst about last weekend, I forgot to post about how much fun I had! On Saturday we went shopping for clothes and I managed to buy nothing! Actually, we were mostly unsuccessful but we did have fun! Then we were super stealthy in getting C to L and V’s place where they had made the MOST AWESOME CAKE (pictures of cake and all of us at mini-golf can be found here: http://shihadchick.livejournal.com/1542211.html#cutid1)

Then we kidnapped a B and watched most of Tipping the Velvet until 4 am (so much fun!) On Sunday we went out, stayed too long in Esqures and ended up just bringing B back here again for dinner of stir fry before bringing her back home. We did get her addicted to Better Off Ted :D
Hopefully we shall do more fun things this weekend despite our inability to organize ponies.

ETA: HTML fixed. One day I'm going to remember that microsoft word changes my quotation marks into something LJ doesn't recognize.

Okay guys, I need to make an objective post about this. Feel free to help.

I've spent the last year in New Zealand. In April, [livejournal.com profile] shihadchick got me a job at her work while she went to the USA for 6 weeks (yay nepotism). I feel I did a relatively good job with minimal amounts of whining (and not an overly large amount of sarcasm and I learned how to drive standard and can sort of do it now *proud*) and my opinions were sort of validated in June when they asked me to come back for 3 months (though I try not to get too inflated a head; I'm only replacing Ahmed after all). They're looking for someone to fill Ahmed's role for at least the next year. They're having trouble and C's boss keeps dropping unsubtle hints that I should stay on for a year. The work isn't amazing, but I can easily see myself being perfectly happy doing it for a year. So, what do I do?

I've never had a work term of longer than 8 months, it would probably look okay on my resume to commit to something for a while even if it's of dubious relevance to my degree

Holcim can, according to Hayden, sort out my visa

I currently have no job in Canada to return to

I am part of the wedding party for Christian's wedding next summer.

I would also like to be home for Christmas, attend Con-G in February and MJ in April

I have booked a flight home for October. It will probably cost a lot to cancel and/or change it.

I cannot extend my travel insurance but Holcim (C's company) apparently subsidizes insurance and I would be able to purchase insurance for while I'm here.

If I stay, I can live with C and then live with [livejournal.com profile] blademistress after V leaves her.

If I stay I can be here for C's 30th.

If I stay, I'll have more time to show C all the stuff she still needs to watch, see more of NZ, go to Auckland Armageddon and the U2 concert with all the fangirls.

I miss my Canada friends and my family

[livejournal.com profile] digitalsprawl might need the work at Holcim and C's garage more than I do.

Continuing to procrastinate being an adult might not be the best decision as I would still like to find a goal and work towards it and I keep not bothering to do that while I'm here but I'm coming around to the idea that that might not be such a big deal. My friends and acquaintances here are mostly older than me and have similar problems and are still awesome and driven in different ways and don't have their lives as classically put together as some of my firends back home and make me feel better about being a total flake.

Okay, so that's that. I'll add more if I think of anything else but that's the gist of the arguments currently. Feel free to add, challenge, change, argue and convince. I'm in decision-stressing-over mode.

Guys, I learned today that New Zealand’s basketball team is called ‘The Tall Blacks’. Groan! I can’t figure out if it’s clever or just sad.

For those of you unfamiliar with New Zealand, the main sports team, the rugby team is called ‘The All Blacks’.
Soccer - All Whites
Cricket - Black Caps
Hockey - Black Sticks
Ice Hockey - Ice Blacks
Softball - Black Sox

Yeah, I think the basketball one is the most ridiculous one. Have I missed any, NZ peeps?

On the way to work today (C's car is in for repairs), Hayden asked what we’d thought of Inception. Having spend much of the previous night reading [livejournal.com profile] nova33’s Arthur/Eames fic recs, I had to swallow my tongue. Then C said something about liking that the kid from thrid rock had grown up to be in bigger and better things and Hayden said yes, he really liked his character. I had to stop before I said 'my other favourite character was that Eames guy' *facepalm*

Okay, post 2, which won't be finished before C gets home and we leave for our errands.
Lawyer up! )

Alright guys, so I don't know where I'm at right now.

On one hand, the place in Ashburton is great. For 125 a week, I get a shared room with internet and laundry included.

I've heard good things about the placement agency, but I'm supposed to have started work today, and it got delayed until tomorrow, so I have some trepidation - I need to turn a profit of at least 1000 dollars in 7 weeks or this venture's useless. It should be more than doable if I have some level of steady work. I guess I'll see how it goes in the next few days. The landlord here did say that work is usually pretty steadily available from April-August and should really pick up in the next couple weeks.

[livejournal.com profile] shihadchick says that now (they said no last week when I was, you know, looking) her company is willing to offer me work until April 9th and I can't decide because seeing her and [livejournal.com profile] jocondite but also getting up there and potentially no work after April 9th. Stupid decisions.

My credit card got suspended because of my purchase of plane tickets to Taiwan, but luckily there's a landline here that I could use to call my bank and get that straightened out. I also managed to get my bank account set up properly, so it'll be functioning now when I actually get money going into it. Hopefully that will be before my next week's 'rent' is due.

Oh and I need to decide what to do when/if Lori comes to visit me. NZ things still on my to do list:
Abel Tasman
Stewart Island
Arthur's pass

Anything else I should add to the list? Waiheke island?
Lori probably will only do the south island and I'm going through all my travel decisions again wrt her arrival - car or bus, hostel or couches, free or planned?

What shall I eat? I'm not used to shopping for myself anymore lol
michanna: (Default)
[livejournal.com profile] jocondite made us tasty food of tasty and I probably ate too much of it b/c bouncing off the walls, but it was so tasty. The chocolate pie that was more like chocolate soup in a laboured-over homemade pie crust was delightfully fun to play with :D
I'm glad [livejournal.com profile] shihadchick was feeling better enough to go with us.

The three of them were all talking about their fic writing. Me = intimidated. I dislike beign the one in the room who is least good at something b/c insecure! And the idea of writing something and then putting it on the internet for anyone to read is scary.

In other news, I really love Greek. You guys, I only watched it because R and C kept talking about it and I wanted to understand who they were talking about. I expected to watch a couple episodes, roll my eyes at their silly teenage drama in the way most of you are familiar with when people speak of things like Friends, The OC, Grey's Anatomy or Smallville in my presence. But instead, I can't get enough of it. It's so adorable and clever and the characters are all wonderful and human (except Lizzy) and do real normal people things to each other.

[livejournal.com profile] teddy0bear, go watch Middleman. I know you got it and I want validation of my gift choices.

Spent most of the day in a Con-G meeting. We're short on time but finally kicking it into gear and it will be even more awesome this year as it was last year. Check out www.con-g.com.

Time to write more drivel before bed. Tomorrow I go up north and then on Friday I have a meeting with a uni prof who might have some good advice and direction for a floundering idealist like myself. Wish me luck.

PS. A different uni prof says she'll meet with me next Wednesday, but she also basically said she'd have no useful information for me as she has only been teaching in NZ for 5 years and has no job-related suggestions. Do I bother?

Since my post seems to have gotten lost, I am cross-posting this from wordpress manually:
It was posted on December 17th

I reactivated my photobucket.
Japan pictures can now be found here:
My photobucket Japan pictures

There are othher pictures up in that photobucket too. Scrolling through them is a little annoying. next If anyone finds a better way to do it than clicking on the picture on the left, let me know.

I am extremely confused about why today is not Friday but at least [livejournal.com profile] dart_dense_boy and I now have fun plans for the evening.

I is stuffed up in that ow pressure kind of way.

Had a good conversation with every one of my family members yesterday, which is monumental! Lori, who is sick and home alone while my parents are at the cottage, even got Lucky to say hi to me (after the post of yesterday, she felt it was a good idea). Amy's still only got one roommate because her friends suck and keep backing out on her. My parents are silly and that's about all.

Things to buy for my trip to New Zealand
Smaller laptop? (look into pricing)
Travel Insurance
Bus Trip pass?
Diva cup (:S but so much smaller for travelling ...)
New Toothbrush
Lonely Planet Guide

Things to Do Before I leave
Make Con-G a business
Alberta Health and Wellness
Double check that I don't need a return flight
Contact some recruitment agencies
Caitlin's front hall and sewing room
Cancel cell phone
Stop rrsp payments
Move my stuff to Waterloo

Things to make sure I pack (that I don't have right now)
Little backpack that zips onto the big one
Con-G t-shirt
