Okay, post 2, which won't be finished before C gets home and we leave for our errands.
So, as many of you know, when I was on the coromandel peninsula, a number of my possessions were stolen when robbers smashed the side window of our car. We were renting through Avis. (The guy who went to the Coromandel with me, R, is the one whose name was on the rental agreement.)
Upon returning the car to Avis, they said that they were going to reserve $500 from R's account and refund us the difference in the $500 and the repair costs. They quoted us $100 for the repair unless unexpected work was required. The car had a minor dent on the side panel of the window as well as, obviously, the window repair.
Upon receiving the receipts, we had been charged $320 for the window repair and $290 for the side panel repair. This, obviously, made me blanche. Between my travel and the fact that my name was not the one on the agreement, there was little I could do to figure out the situation.
Now C is being extremely kind and gung ho and using her local knowledge to keep me motivated and we are going to fight it. There are a number of fishy things about how we were treated by the company and rights that we have according to New Zealand law that were not observed properly. I can go into more detail if anyone's interested.
C's delighted by noticing that the window repair invoice actually has a trademark infringement at the bottom of it, so worst case scenario, we can at least make ourselves feel better by pointing this out to the trademark owner.
The part of this that makes me an idiot is that in the aftermath of the theft, I was feeling guilty about the fact that they had broken in to get my bag and offered to pay for the full repairs. Partly I didn't expect that it would be more than $100 and partly, though I meant it, I didn't really expect R to let that ride or to hold me to it. He's going to help us out with fighting them but I am witholding payment until we make sure he's provided everything we need him to.
