Now the fun part of my day: Going through all my internet bookmarks and files and folders and papers and spamming my hotmail account with all the stuff I have at work that I want at home ...
Maybe I'd better spam my gmail.
And if anyone's bored enough to want to read something random and incomplete,
I warn you, it's un-beta-ed.
She watched the white streaks of lightning cut ragged paths through the storm-darkened horizon. The sky faded to orange and magenta as the dust and sand kicked up by the storm flooded the sky. Inexorable black clouds roiled in from the west, moving over her homeland.
The storm would not reach them here, of that she was sure. She had felt this storm coming just over a week ago and had been using every method she knew of to find a place that her people could go to be safe. It had taken a long, hard week of travel to reach this spot, but when the storm had become visible, moving along the horizon towards them, everyone stopped questioning her urgency.
Two stones slid down the slope behind her. Her ears swiveled back toward the noise. She could not smell who was coming; the wind was blowing the other direction. It was likely one of her own people, but untold dangers could exist in this place and she did not want to risk a wrong move. She readied herself, one hand brushing one dagger lightly.
It was not until the child clambered up onto the rock next to her that she relaxed.
“Yes Berano?” she inquired impassively, her eyes not moving from the storm before her.
The boy sat silently for a moment, his eyes fascinated as he watched the sky.
She turned her eyes to him when he finally said, “is it real? Is it,” he paused, searching for a word, “normal?”
She understood what he was trying to ask. Her eyes moved back to the horizon slowly.
“It is not normal in that it is a very unusual event. It is, however, natural, or I would not have been able to sense it.”
He turned to face her and she met his gaze.
“You once told me that a mage can effect the natural world without using magic on it directly and that if he did that, you would still sense it as part of the natural web.”
She smiled slightly, proud that he remembered.
“Yes, Berano, that is correct and it is also why I am here, pondering this storm when my people could undoubtedly use my help. Your mother sent you here to get me for that reason didn’t she?”
He nodded slightly, but continued to watch her, waiting expectantly.
Obligingly, she continued, “If a mage wanted to cause this storm and this destruction, he would have used his magic to cause the storm directly, and I would not have been able to sense it.”
The boy blanched slightly at the thought of someone being capable of cold-bloodedly creating this.
She continued, “However, I did feel this one. If this storm was caused indirectly, as an affect of some performed magic, what on earth was done? It must have been monumental.”
Berano thought out loud, “The crown knows we live on this land. Don’t they normally warn us if their magics are going to affect our land?”
She nodded slightly, adding to his thought, “Which could mean a few things: The magic may have been unplanned; an emergency. However, in that case, there still should have been time to warn use before the storm hit.
“The magic may have been illegal; it could have been magic performed by a non-registered mage. But even illegal mages are part of the guild and understand the ramifications of their actions. I can’t imagine any of them accidentally causing this.
“That leads to two conclusions. Either the person creating this is not a mage, but a completely untrained mind. Judging from the power behind it, I’d say that’s unlikely.”
She stopped, looking out over the desert quietly.
She could feel the boy beside her chewing over her words. He never took what she said completely at face value. She knew he would follow her arguments and see if he could come up with any loopholes or alternatives. It was one of the reasons she liked talking to the boy and if his mother ever allowed it, she would take him on as her apprentice.
There's more, but I don't know if I like the direction it took so I'm not going to post that yet ...

Date: 2006-04-27 07:43 pm (UTC)It might be the FF Tactics Advanced talking, but I'm imagining furries. Like, foxlike creatures with opposable thumbs (I think it was the swiveling ears). If they are, in fact, human, you might want to do a bit more description. :)
Also, in that context it's "effect" not "affect". But... no more critiquing from me! Finish, finish!!

Date: 2006-04-27 08:50 pm (UTC)an anonymous post ... hrm.
*changes the effect/affect typo*
They are not human ... at least she's not. I was going to describe the species dynamic of the tribe - I had it all worked out in my head - except this came out instead ... it'll have to come later in the story.
I was thinking more desert cat than fox, but it all works ...

Date: 2006-04-27 09:32 pm (UTC)1. Words - love to speak them, hear them, read them, revel in them, feel them, fall into them etc. (you get the picture :p)
2. Weird - uhm. Because I am.
3. Wish - cuz when you've stopped wishing, what've you got left to live for?
4. World - "Be the change you want to see in the world" - Ghandi
5. Whisper - LOUD IS GOOD so that you can appreciate the quiet moments
6. Winter - snow is a lovely thing. And there's nothing quite like being snug and warm in bed early on a cold winter's day...
7. Water - the stuff life's made of. See #1: Words
8. Wealth - and not the material kind either. Again, faith in the world is a wonderful thing^^
9. Warmth - of the heart, of the body, of the soul. Cold, after all, is just the absence of warmth
10. Wild - Control is good... but only because, every once in a while, you get to lose it :p "What are you going to do with your one wild and precious life?" - Mary Oliver

And desert cat works too. I was thinking moogles from FFTA and they look really cat-like (all long ears and whatnot).

Date: 2006-04-28 02:58 pm (UTC)Moogle! Okay, that's it, she's a moogle ... *giggle* just because I like that word
Cairan decided that he doesn't need my room after all. *pouts* I was getting used to the idea of having an extra $60.
