Okay, so on Friday afternoon, I was told that I had work on Sunday. I didn't hear anything on Saturday, so on Sunday I showed up at 7 like we had been doing for the other days of work.

No one showed up.

I didn't want to call the Canstaff guy because it was Sunday morning and i didn't want to disturb him if it was his day off. I finally called at 10 and he said there was work and he'd come get me. I was very confused.

Turns out they worked all day Saturday. They only had one of the harvesters running, so they only needed half the people. Fine.

The part that makes me mad is that the people they had working yesterday are the same people they were going to have working today. I wasn't going to have work on Sunday except that the two guys (who worked all day Saturday) didn't show up. And I still think I wouldn't have had work if I didn't call him at the right time.

Over the course of the day, I talked myself down a little, thinking that maybe it was a senority thing - that they'd been with Canstaff for longer or that it was a New Zealand thing since apparently there are laws here that if there are willing and able New Zealand workers for a job, they have to hire them before the locals ...

Except that I learned at the end of the day that they called 3 other people before me, all of whom are backpackers and have had steadier work than me.

So the upshot is that I, again, only got 6 hours of work today due to starting at 11 instead of 8. Meaning that in 5 days of work, I've now had 19 hours. At least I'm scheduled to work tomorrow.

I'm a little peeved that they didn't even call me on Saturday to tell me that I didn't have work on Sunday. That would have given me the opportunity to ask questions like 'why are the other guys getting more work and opportunities than me?'

Anyway, I'm really glad that the other two guys didn't show up today and I'm going to start looking for alternative, more reliable work for Thursday, after payday.

I also need to decide if I can afford to take a couple days off next weekend to go camping on the Banks peninsula ... Though I would need a ride back here from Christchurch if I decided to do that.

I think you should call them and ask anyways. Honestly, there might be a 'real' reason, and I think it would help you to know that and let you let off some steam. Alternatively, there might not be, and I think that would help you to know that they are screwing you over, and that you need to look for alternatives.

I agree with Nari. What happened with the other opportunity you were thinking about?
